SNHR & DCHRS- Syria- The Hameh Massacre- 26/06/2012-

Regime forces are moving their offensive from eastern to western Damascus

At 02:30, Tuesday 26/06/2012, the Syrian regime’s army tanks, armoured vehicles and at least 15,000 15,000 troops deployed, including soldiers from the regime's army and pro-regime shabeeha militias, who came from the neighbouring areas Jabal al-Ward and al-Buhouth al-Ilmya, raided al-Hameh city twelve kilometres to the west of the Syrian capital Damascus. These forces have shelled the city for two hours destroying numerous homes. They took the lives of twenty one civilians in a mere two hours. Most of the victims were killed by Syrian regime’s army snipers, and all of the victims have been buried in al-Sadat cemetery.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) & Damascus Centre for Human Rights Studies (DCHRS) strongly condemn this unmatched massacre which amounts to a crime against humanity as well as all other massacres perpetrated by the Syrian regime against the Syrian people round the clock. SNHR & DCHRS hold the Syrian regime and Bashar al-Assad, head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian regime’s army, completely and directly responsible for all of those massacres and their implications and consequences. SNHR and DCHRS call on the United Nations and the UN Security Council to swiftly take all necessary measures to protect civilians and fulfil their legal and moral responsibilities by accelerating the indictment of all those responsible for the perpetration of these massacres to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
