Massacres in Homs‏ | Print |

Documenting two new massacres in Homs – Deir Ba’lbeh: 42 victims fell to the first massacre, and 18 victims fell to the second one.

These massacres were documented on 10/04/2012. It is the same date that Mr Kofi Anan demanded the Syrian regime to stop the killing. This massacre is considered a reply by the Syrian regime to Anan’s demand. These massacres were perpetrated on 09/04/2012; we have finished documenting names and details at dawn today.

The first one was perpetrated in Homs- Deir Ba’lbeh neighbourhood, Hafara quarter. 42 people were killed in this massacre including 5 women and 5 children. The massacre:

The Syrian army perpetrated this massacre after raiding parts of this quarter during the past days after fierce shelling that was carried on for a week while people tried to flee. People who succeeded in fleeing the neighbourhood related to SNHR’s member in Homs the atrocities committed against them including killings, torture, slaughter, dragging young men by tanks, raping women and killing children in front of their parents.

Testimonies by those who miraculously survived documented horrendous atrocities committed by the regime forces inside the neighbourhood. They also provided lists of victims’ names, family names, women and children. The bodies were buried in shallow graves and the smell started to spread from their decomposing bodies. More than 42 victims were killed including 5 women and 5 children.

After the massacre that was documented yesterday, which resulted in 22 victims, residents of the quarter woke up today to a new one with another 18 new victims. The Syrian Network for Human Rights holds Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president and Chief Commander of the Military and Armed Forces for all misdeeds of killings, torture and massacres being committed in Syria who holds the primary responsibility for ordering such misdeeds to be committed. We also consider all the heads of the security apparatus and military brigades, directly involved in these misdeeds, hence we demand the UN Security Council to truly assume its responsibilities, not to deal with the case using double standards and to bring all those responsible for committing crimes against humanity in Syria to the International Criminal Court without any delay following the example of the quick measures taken in response to crimes against humanity committed in the context of the Libyan revolution which clearly were not in any way different from what has happened and is still happening in Syria under the nose of the world.
